The Analysis of Character Education and Cultural Values as Portrayed in Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s Bumi Manusia and Anak Semua Bangsa Novels

Abstract

This applied research aims to describe the character education and the cultural values in Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s Bumi Manusia and Anak Semua Bangsa novels with a qualitative descriptive genre. The research instruments include theories of psycho-colonialism, character education and cultural values. The research data were collected using observation and documentation methods. The data were analyzed using a descriptive qualitative technique based on theories of psycho-colonialism, character education and cultural values. Bumi Manusia and Anak Semua Bangsa are novels that have some strong important characters with regard to the character education and cultural values in senior high schools and higher education institutions. The strong, young and important character named Minke has got 8 characteristics in relation to modern humans such as nationalistic, independent (autonomous), creative, intellectual, open-minded, extremely respectful to parents and teachers, honest, compassionate, and sympathetic to the grassroots (wong cilik). Moreover, brotherhood spirit toward others, democratic, independent, adaptive to European cultures, anti-colonialism, anti-feudalism, resistant, and humanistic are set to be necessary materials for character education and cultural values. Like Minke, another character named Nyai Ontosoroh has got some strong characteristics such  as independence, hardworking, powerful, open, confidence, brave, modern, liberal, national, resolute, caring about the grassroots, strong and persistent, autonomous, nationalistic, anti-colonialism, anti-feudalism, resistant but humanistic, all of which become materials for character education and cultural values.
