Language Variation Choice in Social Interaction among Bilingual Speech Community

Abstract

The objectives of this research is to describe (1) forms of language variation in social interaction among bilibgual speech community and (2) factors affecting the language variation choice in social interaction among bilingual speech community.

This research was conducted in Surakarta and Yogyakarta which are considered as a bilingual speech community (Javanese and Indonesian). The data used for this descriptive qualitative research is language variation within conversations used by bilingual speakers of Javanese and Indonesian in both cities. The source of data is in the form language used by bilingual Javanese-Indonesian speech community. The data collection was done through observation. The data collection technique used are both participatory observation and non-participatory observation. The research instrument is the researchers who are equipped with Javanese linguistics and cultural knowledge. The analysis method used is identity method by applying pragmatics and transitional comparison.

The result shows that (1) forms of language variation choice in the social interaction among bilingual Indonesian-Javanese speech community are: (a) Indonesian and Indonesian, (b) Indonesian and Krama Javanese, (c) Indonesian and Ngoko Javanese, (d) Krama Javanese and Krama Javanese, (e) Krama Javanese and Ngoko Javanese, (f) Ngoko Javanese and Ngoko Javanese, (g)  Krama Javanese and Indonesian, and (h) Ngoko Javanese and Indonesian; (2) Factors affecting language variation choices are (a) social status, (b) age, (c) language proficiency, (d) speech intention, (e) relationship distance
