Abstract

This study aims to describe students’ ability to write poetry and to find out their challenges when writing ones. Data collection techniques used were observation, interviews, and document analysis. Data analysis was carried out utilizing Miles and Huberman model. The study showed their ability to write poetry varied widely. Judging from the intrinsic element, the title and content of most of the poems are great. Some students can also create arrays or lines with beautiful, standard words that rhyme. Between verses in poetry are also interrelated and contain meaning with the imagination of most students quite impressive. The challenges in which they experience are in choosing the right words and arranging sentences to fit and interrelate between the verses. Teacher helped students with examples of poetry and a collection of diction, and directs students to recall previous experiences in writing poetry based on what students think, see, and feel.
